The kiwi is the berry of a bush-type creeper with meter-long tendrils. The fruit hangs on long stems. The Hayward kiwi is an oval fruit with a brownish green downy skin 5-8 cm long and up to 5 cm in diameter. It weighs about 70-150 g.
This yellow, pulpy kiwi resembles the Hayward kiwi in size and form. An unusual feature is, however, the prominent, hard nose at the flowering end. The skin is smooth and downy-like. The pulp of the gold kiwi is very sweet and contains less acid.
QUALITYNOTE
The kiwi belongs to the fruit that ripen afterwards and are harvested when hard and unripe. They can be stored well and keep in a refrigerator for a couple of weeks. They can be stored for 4-6 months at 0-0.5° C and a relative humidity of over 95 %. Under CA conditions, the storage period can be
extended. The gold kiwi is much more sensitive than the green kiwi they should be handled like ripe summer fruit. The storage conditiond should be about 0° C, but not below. Kiwis are ethylene sensitive!
GOOD TO KNOW
The Vitamin C content of the gold kiwi is about 50 % higher (100 mg) than that of the Hayward kiwi (70 mg). It also has almost double the content of Vitimin E (2.1 mg to 1.1 mg). These yellow, pulpy kiwis are to the similar Hayward in size and shape.
